The CAT is involved in a variety of projects within the Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science. One of them is assisting with MCECS Freshmen Student and Transfer Student Orientations. Orientations are a day-long event where new students have the opportunity to visit the Portland State campus, meet with their department advisers, learn about their degree requirements and meet their friendly IT department.

Volunteers get set up in one of our computer labs and help students get their MCECS account up and running, go through procedures and policies, explain building access and show them where we’re located and how they can reach us in the event of future questions. During this time students are also encouraged to register for classes since department advisers remain available throughout the session.

Depending on the need and availability of our volunteers, students receive a one-on-one or a group orientation. We have also recently started participating in Graduate Student Orientations and International Student Orientations. The difference being that these groups receive group orientations in the form of a slide presentation and there is some modification of content.
